“Sentinel satellite missions to map agro-eco–environmental variables”
Sylvain Ferrant, IRD researcher from CESBIO (Centre d’Etudes Spatiales de la BIOsphère), Toulouse, France
Space programs for the systematic global acquisition of high-resolution satellite images of space and time around the world (Sentinel, Landsat), make available, free of charge, quantities of continental surface observations that can often be used to generalize local environmental studies. This situation makes the transfer of big data exploration tools essential for environmental laboratories. Dr Ferrant is working on the development and adaptation of these machine-learning-based tools to better assess environmental issues (for Sentinel-1&2 data in particular) and their transfer to partners and colleagues worldwide.
He will present some examples of applications developed at CESBIO with a focus on 1- his activities on water resources quantification for irrigation in India and 2- the specific objectives of his visit on peatland mapping in the Argentinian Andes.
